Athletes matter at Marquette U.

They give new meaning to extracurricular activity:

All told, five Marquette athletes were accused of sexual misconduct by three female students last year. The university did not report the allegations to Milwaukee police, as required by Wisconsin law. . . . . One of the women, who told police she was raped by an athlete in February, said she was pleased federal authorities are investigating.

Thing is, you have to protect the program:

Two of the women told the Tribune that campus security officers discouraged them from going to police by warning that their accusations would make national headlines. The third said she had no problems with how the school handled the case.
