Nannies, caregivers, housekeepers at League of Women Voters meeting

Aug. 27 meeting, at Oak Park Library.

Oak Park Chronicles

Attended my first meeting last night, at the library. Was welcomed, encouraged to join up. Took a seat up front, 2nd row, looked about me and saw maybe 35 people, including one other man, he seated with a woman maybe his wife.

Speakers hit on domestic workers’ plight. These do scut work so other work can be done: home care to the disabled and otherwise incompetent, watching children, housekeeping. Our age of the working woman means outside the home. In come the free-lance domestic, or household, workers, to fill the gap.

They aren’t unionized and not about to be so. Not enough money involved. Union dues? Forget it. Some or many struggle to keep their own bodies and souls together while changing bed clothes and nannying and scrubbing floors for “working women,” many for $2 or more under minimum wage. Food runs out in their own households, bills are paid…

I love a pundit:

The chance that . . .

Pat Quinn wins the nomination: 95 percent. Still a chance he does something dumb enough to draw Dan Hynes Kwame Raoul Sheila Simon Roland Burris into the race.

Especially when he’s so darn smart. Tombstone Roland, of course!!!

White House Squirts Zippo Fluid on Durbin’s Smoldering Strides

Dick D. and the White House and his wild, wild history:

Mother Earth, please blow thy winds to my left -H. Reid

Hey, we’ve all been there – told a stretcher about something that might, just might mind you, add a little more cayenne to a yarn, but no one has told so many to no good purpose as Illinois Senior U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. He once tried to make the treatment of terrorists by military personal a huge hoop-de-do –

“in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime–Pol Pot or others–that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.” Durbin 2005

– and ended up with the handle of Durbin the Turban. Ouch.

Bishop Paprocki: Saying the Rosary for Gay Marriage is Blasphemy

The bishop of Springtown will not, will not be moved:

As reported at Catholic Culture, the bishop made it clear that anyone attempting to enter the cathedral wearing the “rainbow sash” would be denied entrance, and anyone praying out loud for same-sex marriage would be asked to leave.

“It is blasphemy to show disrespect or irreverence to God or to something holy…Since Jesus clearly taught that marriage as created by God is a sacred institution between a man and a woman (see Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9), praying for same-sex marriage should be seen as blasphemous and as such will not be permitted in the cathedral.”

This is really common sense when you get down to it. Using worship space to pressure whom? God? A bishop? None of these. Voters!
