The late Andrew Breitbart was right on a big story, NYTimes story demonstrates

The so-called Pigford scandal:

Today he is vindicated by a New York Times story on page A1.

The compensation effort sprang from a desire to redress what the government and a federal judge agreed was a painful legacy of bias against African-Americans by the Agriculture Department. But an examination by The New York Times shows that it became a runaway train, driven by racial politics, pressure from influential members of Congress and law firms that stand to gain more than $130 million in fees. In the past five years, it has grown to encompass a second group of African-Americans as well as Hispanic, female and Native American farmers. In all, more than 90,000 people have filed claims. The total cost could top $4.4 billion.

It’s rare that we suggest this about a New York Times article, but read the whole thing.

In the NYT piece:

Public criticism came primarily from conservative news outlets like Breitbart.com and from Congressional conservatives like Representative Steve King, Republican of Iowa, who described the program as rife with fraud. Few Republicans or Democrats supported him. Asked why, Mr. King said, “Never underestimate the fear of being called a racist.”

Bullshit, dangerous talk from local socialists

Oak Park Chronicles

Poverty is very much with us, but we can eradicate it | Articles | News | OakPark.com.

Dangerous? Hold out hope like that, and either you are hopelessly sentimental or you want to justify just about anything in governmental interference in the lives of men, women, and children.

This at the heart of the “progressive” impossible dreaming. Tut-tut.

Poverty is structural and can be eliminated. In 1962, [socialist] Michael Harrington’s The Other America: Poverty in the United States, was published. This groundbreaking work made American poverty visible. It is credited with kick-starting America’s War on Poverty, launched by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The U.S. poverty rate declined from 19% in 1964 to a low of 11.1% in 1973.

Getting religion changed Tamerlan’s life

It happened during a rough spot for him as a failed boxer, among other things, per Wall St. Journal. At his mother’s urging, he got very serious about being a Muslim.

During this turmoil, his mother [then living in the
U.S.] encouraged him to turn to Islam. “I told Tamerlan [Tsarnaeva, the dead
marathon brother] that we are Muslim, and we are not practicing our religion, and how can we call ourselves Muslims?” Mrs. Tsarnaeva said. “And that’s how Tamerlan started reading about Islam, and he started praying, and he got more and more and more into his religion.”

Relatives and friends say they saw a shift in the young man. Neighbors noticed that the parties stopped. “I’m telling you, something turned,” said Mr. Vasquez. “And it was dramatic.”

Tamerlan wasn’t the only Tsarnaev who was changing. His mother grew more religious alongside him. She quit her job at the spa and started doing facials in her home, saying she didn’t want to work on men. “I started reading and started learning, I started reading with my Tamerlan,” Mrs. Tsarnaeva said.

Her sister-in-law, Maret, said she was startled by the transformation. She recalled having a Skype conversation with Anzor, while he was in Makhachkala, and spotting Zubeidat in the background covered in a veil. “We’re not used to seeing her like that because she used to wear high heels and a low dress,” Maret said.

He got religion and went overboard. Major religion story here.

Down goes the liquor commissioner barrier

Oak Park Chronicles

Don Harmon to the rescue.

With amendment to existing law:

1934 Liquor Control Act established that suburban mayors or presidents would also serve as local liquor control commissioner, and to avoid conflicts of interest they could not hold liquor licenses in the communities that elected them.

The General Assembly amended the law last year to exempt communities of 50,000 or less and provide for delegation of liquor commissioner duties to another official in such cases. With Oak Park’s current populationat about 52,000, the Harmon amendment would slightly increase the exemption so it would apply to communities of 55,000 or less.

Doing so would allow Abu-Taleb to keep his liquor license for Maya del Sol and direct the other members of the Village Board to appoint a replacement liquor commissioner.

The amendment passed the senate 47-3 April 18, will go to the House in “a couple weeks,” reports Patch.

Bill Cameron 4/22/13

WLS Sunday 4/21/13, 7 a.m., newsman Bill Cameron with Eric, Lynn, Greg, Ray. Old hands all. On coverage of anti-gunners being sparse bec. of “liberal bias” mentioned by Bill C, Lynn Sweet says “newsworthy” anti-gunners get coverage.

Oh Lynn, the captive of newsworthiness — as determined by whom? Her and other staunch liberals. Poor thing.

She speaks From the Cocoon, driven by events, it’s not her fault.

As for immigration “reform,” Cameron refers to Mayor E’s (in)famous not letting crisis go to waste, asks, so we can expect anti-reformers to make hay of the Marathon Murders done by immigrants? Ah yes, he means as Sandy Hook was not wasted by gun controllers?

Nonetheless, Cameron on Sundays is a good choice. He brings things up, does a bit of eye-poking to the likes of Sweet, who rarely has that happen.

Gossip as disturbance, from Pope Francis

Not for attribution

Words of everyday wisdom:

“When we prefer to gossip, gossip about others, criticize others- these are everyday things that happen to everyone, including me – these are the temptations of the evil one who does not want the Spirit to come to us and bring about peace and meekness in the Christian community”.

“These struggles always exist” in the parish, in the family, in the neighborhood, among friends”. Instead through the Spirit we are born into a new life, he makes us “meek, charitable.”
