You’re hired, said Jesus

He had just preached from Simon Peter’s boat, then told him to go out and fish some more. Bad night for fishing, Lord, said Simon Peter (whose wife’s fever Jesus had just brought down). They aren’t there.

Do it anyway, said Jesus, and thereby hangs a tale. So many fish were caught that when they got back to shore, Simon P. said, You better go. You don’t want to spend any more time with me, I’m a sinner.

Forget that, said Jesus. You’re hired. Not to fish for fish but for men (and women).

Simon P’s crew, James and John, got the idea. They came along too, charter members of Jesus’  team. And thereby hangs an even greater tale.

The Donald and Francis as populists

Who are the two most populist-popular people in the world?

Trump and Pope Francis.

One on the right, other on the left.

One smart, the other not quite but shrewd.

One with clear, other with mixed, signals.

One a candidate, the other already elected after a stealth candidacy.

One worldly, other other-worldly with keen if not main interest in this one.

One vague on details, other over-detailed.

Both draw huge crowds, with Pope way ahead of T. in this respect. But give T. time.
