Thanks for this piece. Our friends Mary and Brian (with Dan as best man, and later Brian as his) were married in ’94 with Fr. Hardon presiding. (Is that the correct word?) About a year ago they completed Fr. Hardon’s correspondence course for catechists. I had no idea he was such a pariah. Now I have a much better understanding of our friends’ way of living. They seem to imitate many of his habits.

Pariah, all right. Even in the early ’60s when he taught at West Baden, as I mention in Company Man: My Jesuit Life, 1950-1968, he had no one on his side that I could see. Mid-50s too, as I have in my book. I also recall he always had paper in his typewriter in his room. Scribble, scribble, as the king said to Gibbon.

We have given each of our grandchildren a copy of Fr. HARDON’S catechism at their confirmations. ” to practice your faith, you must know your faith.” is what I wrote to each. It is easy to understand. I winder if any of them has ever opened theirs?
