How can there be such hostility toward the old ways of saying Mass? What’s the source of it?
Banned completely in the ’70s, restored by John Paul II and Benedict XIV, now clearly a bugaboo for the Francis wing of Catholic prelates amd curia biggies and assiduously ignored by many other influentials.
“I am of the opinion, to be sure, that the old rite [Latin mass etc.] should be granted much more generously to all those who desire it.
It’s impossible to see what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that.
A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent.
Can such a community be trusted any more about anything else?”
That was Joseph Ratzinger (to be Benedict XVI) in Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium- An Interview With Peter Seewald, 1997.
