I have followed Fr. Felix’s case with a lot of intrest and I must confess that the way it was dealt with left a lot to be desired. The whole problem was a cultural problem not child abuse as it is reported. Fr. Felix visited family friends. He was offered beer which he took and then saw an eleven year girl of the family crying. He tried to console the girl as it is often done in his home country Kenya but this was interpreted as “improper touching” and then later “sexual abuse.” Truth will set us free.

Yes. He did not set her up in predator fashion. His sentence seems light, which supports his being seen as a lesser threat, it seems. He was stopped immediately when the child (apparently) shot out of the room. We rightly do not wish to minimize the shock to the child, but Fr. O. has not fit the profile, to judge by news accounts, and this cultural-shift explanation has the ring at least of plausibility.

I’m glad to have stumbled across your old comment. I knew Fr. Felix from Wheeling Jesuit University. I had often wondered if there weren’t a cultural misunderstanding aspect to his case. I wish foreign priests –indeed, anyone from another culture residing here–would have some obligatory orientation to our peculiar ways. In the sexual arena, we push and protect all sorts of aberrant behavior, but smack down hard anyone who looks crooked at a child, all the while telling the child that he can do anything he wishes without his parents knowledge or consent. What an insane culture!

In this respect, I agree, Margaret.

I knew him when I was a child and he “approached” me inappropriately. I told my mom I didn’t like him. No need for details here, but I believe that this was a case of abuse, not cultural difference. I just looked up where he was, he was moved around like every three years and sometimes was unlisted in the directory. I think that’s a bad sign.
