Merkel: ban ‘full veil’ Islamic coverings

No-brainer here. She’s up for re-election, by the way.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who last year opened the door to nearly 1 million mostly Muslim migrants, called Tuesday for a widespread ban on “full veil” Islamic coverings.

Speaking to a cheering conference of her center-right Christian Democratic Union, Merkel – who is launching a bid for a fourth term in elections next year – used her strongest language yet to back a proposal by conservative elements in her party.

The plan would make it a regulatory offense for women to cover their faces in courtrooms, administrative buildings and schools, as well as while driving or attending demonstrations.

“Therefore the full veil is not appropriate here, it should be banned wherever it’s legally possible,” Merkel said.

It’s where rubber meets road as far as Muslim integration is concerned.

FDR vs. blacks in ’30s

He screwed them royal, to put it crudely, with his trickle-down economic policies, which led to widespread singing of the blues in the Southland, including his much-beloved and -revered by liberals minimum-wage legislation, here from Myrdal’s American Dilemma:

During the ’thirties the danger of being a marginal worker became increased by social legislation intended to improve conditions on the labor market.

The dilemma, as viewed from the Negro angle is this: on the one hand, Negroes constitute a disproportionately large number of the workers in the nation who work under imperfect safety rules, in unclean and unhealthy shops, for long hours, and for sweatshop wages; on the other hand, it has largely been the availability of such jobs which has given Negroes any employment at all.

As exploitative working conditions are gradually being abolished, this, of course, must benefit Negro workers most, as they have been exploited most—but only if they are allowed to keep their employment.

But it has mainly been their willingness to accept low labor standards which has been their protection. When government steps in to regulate labor conditions and to enforce minimum standards, it takes away nearly all that is left of the old labor monopoly in the “Negro jobs.”

Lynn Sweet declares as settled fact what’s open to discussion.

Bannon is part of a right-wing movement known as the “alt-right,” a home for white nationalists who are, invited or not, a part of Trump’s winning coalition.

Bannon will be a chief strategist and senior counselor in the Trump White House, as the “alt-right,” with its white supremacist elements, is entering the political mainstream.

An in-my-opinion or two is missing (for what’s bold-faced), unless it’s a between-us-chickens moment for most of her newsie colleagues, not something for a supposed general audience.
