Former NPR CEO opens up about liberal media bias

The fellow has nailed it.

Most reporters and editors are liberal — a now dated Pew Research Center poll found that liberals outnumber conservatives in the media by some 5 to 1, and that comports with my own anecdotal experience at National Public Radio.

When you are liberal, and everyone else around you is as well, it is easy to fall into group think on what stories are important, what sources are legitimate and what the narrative of the day will be.

Newsroom climate matters. And picking stories is at the heart of it. Liberal bias keeps stories alive long after expiration date. Even when accurately and fairly reported — though sometimes coverage itself leans left or falls on its face in that direction. As in choice of sources for reactions, for instance.

  1. I suspect the charge is fairly accurate. The real issue is, is the charge of “liberal” a compliment or a criticism. Sometimes the liberal perspective is simply the more informed open-minded one. But then who’s to say — a conservative?

  2. But then if the charge is accurate, that’s not at least a warning to all who read them? And something they deny? Something that infringes on or destroys their credibility for all but libs like you? And that which serves the nation badly and — here as a onetime newsman I take probably most seriously — violates accepted journalistic principles? You can’t be cool with that. Recall Newsweek editor Evan Thomas on the point-spread advantage Dems have come election time, 14 or 16 per cent, as I recall. Houston, we have a problem. Media not to be trusted.
