What does it mean to trash the Latin mass?

How can there be such hostility toward the old ways of saying Mass? What’s the source of it?

Banned completely in the ’70s, restored by John Paul II and Benedict XIV, now clearly a bugaboo for the Francis wing of Catholic prelates amd curia biggies and assiduously ignored by many other influentials.

“I am of the opinion, to be sure, that the old rite [Latin mass etc.] should be granted much more generously to all those who desire it.

It’s impossible to see what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that.

A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent.

Can such a community be trusted any more about anything else?”

That was Joseph Ratzinger (to be Benedict XVI) in Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium- An Interview With Peter Seewald, 1997.

Janus not the end of public unions, I wrote to the Sun-Times

In response to (scrolling down):

State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, in her July 13 letter [who] writes as if Janus were the end of public unionism, which it isn’t.

Rather, it’s reducing unions’ income from non-members, who are as free as they ever were to join. Her letter should be a plea to the not-yet-organized to persuade them as to the benefits she describes, black women included.

I’m surprised the senator seems not to realize this.

Jim Bowman, Andersonville

Short, sweet, to the immediate point, I trust, which is that Janus is not quite a right-to-work decision, rather a right-not-to-be-held-up.

The Priest’s “Art of Celebrating”

Getting right down to it: About this “Good morning, ” said by the priest at the start of mass:

At times even with the most solemn of celebrations of the Eucharist, once the priest celebrant arrives at the chair, he first addresses the assembly with a friendly “Good morning!”

Sometimes, he follows this with an introductory phrase to the Sign of the Cross,

“Let us begin our prayer, ‘In the name of the Father….’”

Most priests and most people may wonder why there is any question about the use of these two phrases.

The more important question, however, is what does the celebration of Mass expect at this point that renders both phrases out of order?

Putin ‘ALPHA POSTURING’ shows TRUTH of Trump relationship: Body language expert reveals all

What did the expert say about their Helsinki press conference?

“If the [UK prime minister] May/Trump summit looked chilly, this Trump/Putin meeting looked buried under a thick layer of perma-frost.

“Both men arrived performing the kind of alpha posturing you normally see in a boxing ring, swaggering with puffed chests and in Trump’s case a mouth clamp plus what was bordering on a scowl to camera as both pulled at their jackets in what is commonly a ‘prepare to fight’ ritual.

“In the room for the photo-call though they looked more like a sullen, divorcing couple at crisis counseling.

“Putin was especially sphinx-like, returning little of the sparse eye contact he received from Trump and maintaining a poker face even after Trump’s ‘soccer’ flattery was being translated for him.

“Trump sat in his usual ‘Trump Slump’ pose with his legs splayed and his fingers in ‘downward steeple’ position to register macho dominance but this time his fingertips tapped together throughout which is a sign of impatience.

“Putin adopted a more elegant power pose, sitting upright with one elbow on the arm of the chair

but as Trump spoke Putin’s other hands clasped the lower strut of the chair arm as though irritation could have been making him keen to go.

Not happy campers, the lady is saying.
